Château de la Barre has been in the Vanssay family with unbroken lineage since 1404. Staying at Château de la Barre with Count and Countess de Vanssay is a unique opportunity to experience the authentic and gracious way of life of French aristocracy. The château is located in the heart of a bucolic valley, amidst a large private park with colourful and fragrant gardens and surroundings.

Two drawing rooms, two dining rooms and a billiard room, replete with family portraits, post-impressionist paintings and remarkable antiques, provide a charming environment full of understated elegance and refinement.

The family chapel sits next to the Château. And outside, beyond the large terrace and at the foot of the XVIth century fortification walls, the fragrant gardens and 100-acre park lend themselves to a romantic escape in peaceful countryside.

The warm and international welcome extended by Count and Countess Guy and Marnie de Vanssay – he is French, she is Anglo-American – is complemented by special suggestions such as: a balloon flight over the Loire Valley, race car testing on the legendary 24 Hours le Mans track, discovering the famous as well as private chateaux, (upon request, with a VIP visit and even lunch with the owners themselves) hidden gardens, gourmet restaurants, farmer’s markets and selected local wineries, or taking a cooking course based on saffron, the most expensive spice in the world…

This prestigious family home offers a top-notch mixture of gracious hospitality, joie de vivre, and elegance. A stay needs to be requested via a person already known to the owners, who will then issue a personal invitation.
